Lisandro Martinez came under heavy criticism after Manchester United's defeat at Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. TEAMtalk said United have been told they need to consider selling Martinez in the January window, and said he is battling to save his Manchester United career.
Red card against Chelsea
Martinez saw red for two yellow cards against Chelsea on Saturday. Assessing his display on Viaplay, Freddie Ljungberg said: "I feel, when I look at that, I feel sorry for Michael Carrick."
Ljungberg also said: "Everybody is slaughtering Carrick in the media and stuff, ‘Is he good enough as a coach, this and that’; the players are not doing it."
He added: "How they behave, Martinez, doing what he did, I was there, and I felt a bit sick."
Ljungberg also said: "I’ve seen this quite a few times when he does stupid things, doesn’t think about the team first. They let him down."
Schmeichel and Murphy criticism
Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said: "He has cost so many goals, and that is one of the issues with Manchester United, that they’re leaking goals for fun."
Schmeichel also said: "If you’re a big player, you played in a World Cup final, you just can’t perform like that, come out with statements like that , and then perform as he did against Chelsea."
Danny Murphy criticised Martinez on Match of the Day, and TEAMtalk said he called the defender a liability. Murphy said: "It’s getting that way. A player of that experience and quality, he knows better."
Murphy also said: "There’s something obviously not right at the moment in his head; he’s in a different space, because you don’t see the poor performances for a player of that quality."
He continued: "There was the Dominic Solanke issue last week , and then there was the interview, rant, whatever you want to call it, and then today, his performance in the second half was just nowhere near it."
Murphy added: "To go and do that after you’ve just had a yellow… but he’s given Carrick a really big dilemma now."
He also said: "When he’s served the suspension, I think it’s unlikely that Michael, if he’s still the manager, is going to put him back in."
TEAMtalk's wider claims
TEAMtalk described Martinez as a £57m signing from Ajax in summer 2022. TEAMtalk also said Steven Gerrard picked out Martinez as one of eight players not good enough for Manchester United.
Manchester United are on a run of nine games without a win. TEAMtalk said the club are outside the relegation places on goal difference.
