As March 2025 draws to a close, Bitcoin’s total hashrate tapped its all-time peak at 862 exahash per second (EH/s), currently hovering at 853 EH/s. While BTC prices have climbed over 26% since the halving, miners are earning considerably less than before the event. However, firms equipped with the latest generation of application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) machines have gained a significant advantage thanks to liquid cooling breakthroughs.
The Liquid Revolution: Direct-to-Chip Cooling
Traditional air-cooled miners suffer from thermal throttling under sustained high loads. Direct liquid-to-chip (DLC) cooling circumvents this by targeting heat at the source, ensuring sustained peak performance even during prolonged high-intensity operations. Liquid-cooled systems also operate at significantly lower decibel levels, prompting some mining firms to migrate entire fleets to avoid acoustic grievances. The trade-off is a premium price tag and substantial upfront investment in specialized cooling infrastructure such as coolant loops and plumbing.
Top-Tier ASIC Rankings in 2025
At the forefront is Bitmain’s Antminer S21e XP Hydro 3U, peaking at 860 TH/s with an energy efficiency ratio of 13 J/T. Drawing 11,180W, its DLC design maintains optimal performance even in extreme environments. Securing the runner-up title is Auradine’s U.S.-engineered AH3880 hydro-cooled unit, capable of 600 TH/s in turbo mode (16.5 J/T) and 450 TH/s in normal mode (14.5 J/T), offering operational flexibility.
The third spot is claimed by Bitmain’s Antminer S21 XP+ Hydro, generating 500 TH/s with a lean 11 J/T efficiency at 5,500W. It supports multiple cooling fluids including antifreeze, purified water, and deionized water. Bitdeer’s Sealminer A2 Pro Hydro matches 500 TH/s at 14.9 J/T (7,450W), released this month. Rounding out the top five, Microbt’s Whatsminer M66S++ delivers 348 TH/s at 15.5 J/T (5,394W), overclockable to 400–430 TH/s.
Market Dynamics and Future Outlook
Although legacy air-cooled miners still dominate the installed base—with manufacturers continuing to roll out advanced air-cooled iterations—their operational metrics pale in comparison to liquid-cooled titans. The superior efficiency, quieter operation, and sustained performance of DLC systems are driving new deployments toward liquid-based fleets. Bitmain remains the dominant player, but challengers like Auradine and Bitdeer are rapidly gaining ground with innovative designs. As block rewards shrink post-halving, miners’ relentless pursuit of joules-per-terahash optimization will continue to accelerate next-generation water-cooled ASIC development.
