Andreessen Horowitz, or a16z, has released the seventh edition of its Consumer AI rankings and changed the methodology in the process. The list, published every six months, tracks the most popular AI products across two segments: web products ranked by monthly visits and mobile products ranked by monthly active users, with separate Top 50 lists for each. In the latest edition, a16z said AI products primarily used for adult content will no longer appear in the rankings. The firm said the change was not driven by weak usage. It said that, under the previous methodology, those products would have taken more than 20% of the web Top 50, or at least 10 spots. Because of that, a16z decided to treat them as a separate category rather than rank them alongside other consumer AI products. The report also noted that mainstream AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude impose stricter limits on adult content, leaving room for demand for those products.

a16z has published the seventh edition of its Consumer AI rankings, a semiannual list of the most popular AI products. The rankings are split into two Top 50 lists: web products measured by monthly visits and mobile products measured by monthly active users.

The new edition also changes the rules. AI products primarily used for adult content will no longer be included in the rankings.

a16z said the move was not a response to weak demand. It said that if the previous methodology had remained in place, those products would have accounted for more than 20% of the web Top 50, equal to at least 10 positions.

As a result, the firm decided to classify them as a separate category instead of ranking them together with other consumer AI products.

The report added that mainstream AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude maintain stricter limits on adult content, which has left demand for those products in place.
