Abstract, a consumer-focused Ethereum Layer 2 network backed by Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, said it will gradually cease operations and formally shut down its mainnet on Dec. 15, 2026. The team cited stalled growth, thin liquidity, limits in its DeFi ecosystem and a lack of institutional adoption as the main reasons behind the decision. Users have been told to bridge assets out before the shutdown date or they may lose access to funds on the network.
According to the announcement, Abstract deployed more than 144 applications and brought in over 400,000 users through consumer partnerships with brands including Red Bull Racing and Disney. Even so, the company said the industry changed substantially after the project was conceived, and that the model of running a standalone chain focused on consumer crypto did not prove sustainable. Igloo CEO Luca Netz said the company had funded Abstract for the past 18 months and absorbed losses totaling tens of millions of dollars.
Igloo will now redirect resources to Pudgy Penguins and PENGU. The company had raised more than $11 million in July 2024 in a round led by Founders Fund to build Abstract and use Pudgy Penguins’ distribution reach to bring consumers on-chain. Abstract launched its mainnet in January 2025. Netz also said Igloo decided against issuing an Abstract token and would not keep financing the network at the expense of the Pudgy Penguins business.

Why the network is closing and what users need to do
The team said the decision followed stalled growth, thin liquidity, constraints in its DeFi ecosystem and insufficient institutional adoption. Abstract said users must bridge assets off the network before the shutdown date. If they do not, they may no longer be able to access those funds.
Deployment figures and the shift in market conditions
Abstract said it deployed more than 144 applications and brought in over 400,000 users through consumer partnerships with brands including Red Bull Racing and Disney. Even so, the company said the industry had changed significantly since the project was first conceived, and that a standalone chain model built around consumer crypto ultimately proved difficult to sustain.
Igloo’s funding burden and the new focus
Igloo funded Abstract over the past 18 months, according to the announcement. CEO Luca Netz said cumulative losses reached tens of millions of dollars. The company is now redirecting resources to Pudgy Penguins and PENGU.
Fundraising, launch timeline and token decision
In July 2024, Igloo raised more than $11 million in a round led by Founders Fund to develop Abstract and use Pudgy Penguins’ distribution capabilities to bring consumers on-chain. The network launched its mainnet in January 2025.
Netz said Igloo ultimately decided not to issue an Abstract token and would not continue funding the network at the cost of the Pudgy Penguins business.
