Agora, a company specializing in stablecoin infrastructure, has announced a $50 million Series A funding round led by Dragonfly Capital. The proceeds will be used to accelerate the development of its full-stack stablecoin platform, which is designed to support the next generation of decentralized finance applications.
Funding and Strategy
Stablecoins are gaining traction across the crypto ecosystem, and traditional financial institutions are racing to integrate them. Agora issues AUSD, a stablecoin that differs from its centralized counterparts by sharing revenue generated from the underlying reserves with its partners. This model incentivizes commercial adoption. While AUSD currently boasts a market cap of only $150 million—small compared to billion-dollar giants like USDC and USDT—its unique approach has garnered attention.
White-Label Platform for Third-Party Issuance
Agora recently launched a white-label platform that enables other companies to issue, manage, and operate their own stablecoins without building complex infrastructure or securing banking relationships. The company stated: "No need to manage complex infrastructure, secure banking relationships, liquidity, or build from scratch – Agora handles it all. We were long believers that to truly build a platform you needed to start with building the network." This strategy lowers the barrier for financial institutions and fintech firms to enter the stablecoin space.
Focus on Non-U.S. Markets
Co-founder Jan Van Eck emphasized that Agora will continue to focus on markets outside the United States. He noted that inflation and cross-border payment needs are driving stronger demand for stablecoins among overseas financial institutions. "A lot of different financial institutions outside of the U.S., I would say, are looking more aggressively and will be quicker to move than some of the companies in the U.S.," Van Eck said. His background as CEO of asset manager VanEck adds cross-industry credibility to Agora's vision.
Outlook and Competition
With this funding, Agora aims to differentiate itself from dominant stablecoin issuers like Tether and Circle by focusing on infrastructure and revenue-sharing rather than simply issuing a proprietary token. The white-label platform, combined with Agora's previous native launch on the Sui blockchain, positions the company as a key enabler for the next wave of stablecoin adoption. The $50 million infusion reflects strong investor confidence in stablecoin infrastructure. Whether Agora can carve out a sustainable niche in a market dominated by well-funded incumbents remains to be seen.
