Algorand (ALGO) shot up over 20% on Wednesday, reaching an eight-week high of $0.105 and becoming the best performer among the top 100 crypto assets by market cap. The rally came just two days after the token hit an all-time low.
The main catalyst stems from a Google Quantum AI paper that examines threats quantum computing poses to major blockchains. ALGO was mentioned more than 32 times in the document, trailing only Bitcoin and Ethereum in citation frequency. Solana and XRP were mentioned roughly half as often; Hedera and Avalanche received zero mentions. The prestigious research paper gave Algorand a major visibility boost, with investors viewing the recent price floor as a steep discount.
Retail Banking Integration and Derivatives Support
Swiss retail bank PostFinance recently integrated Algorand, enabling its 2.5 million customers to directly trade and hold ALGO using their existing bank accounts. This provides a tangible channel connecting traditional finance to the token.
Derivatives data also turned bullish. CoinGlass reports that Algorand futures open interest surged 55% in the past 24 hours to $58.9 million. The weighted funding rate shifted positive, indicating that long position holders were paying shorts to keep their positions—a bullish market signal.
Technical Breakout: Key Resistance at 200-Day SMA
On the daily chart, ALGO broke out of a descending parallel channel that had capped gains since early this year. Over the past two days, the price has crossed above the 20-day, 50-day, and 100-day simple moving averages (SMA) consecutively, a sign of aggressive bullish momentum. The Supertrend indicator remains green, suggesting the path of least resistance is upward.
The immediate resistance to watch is $0.138, corresponding to the 200-day SMA. A decisive break above that level could signal a long-term trend reversal and open the door for a recovery toward prior yearly highs. On the downside, if ALGO slips below $0.088 (the 50-day SMA), the breakout would be invalidated, likely leading to a retest of the recent all-time lows.
