AMC Theatres and Sony Pictures have teamed up to offer exclusive NFTs to customers who purchase advance tickets for the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Starting December 16, 2021, eligible AMC Stubs members (A-List, Premiere, or Investor Connect) can claim one of 86,000 NFTs issued on the Wax blockchain after buying tickets via the AMC app and scanning a code at the theater. This marks AMC's first foray into the NFT space.

Exclusive Perks for Loyal Fans

According to AMC's announcement, the NFTs will be designed by award-winning animation studio Cub Studio, featuring over 100 unique models inspired by Spider-Man's iconic suits and scenes. AMC CEO Adam Aron stated: “AMC guests and shareholders have been calling for us to get into NFTs, and we couldn't imagine a better starting point than with our friends at Sony Pictures.” The offer is limited to the first 86,000 eligible members, with tickets going on sale a day before the premiere.

Eco-Friendly NFTs on Wax

AMC highlighted the environmental credentials of these NFTs, as they run on the Wax blockchain, which claims to be carbon neutral and processes over 15 million transactions daily at a fraction of the energy cost of proof-of-work chains. Wax is a dedicated NFT platform known for hosting mainstream brand collaborations. Cub Studio's artistic output ensures each NFT is visually distinct, with random distribution among holders.

Broader Implications

The partnership represents a strategic move to revive cinema attendance post-COVID-19 by merging physical moviegoing with digital collectibles. While NFT mania swept through crypto markets in 2021, real-world utility cases were still rare. AMC's experiment could pave the way for more entertainment companies to adopt similar “ticket + NFT” models. Adam Aron hinted at further blockchain initiatives, pending community feedback on the Spider-Man drop.
