Forget about a Lambo and get yourself a Mustang. Classic Recreations, a custom car builder based in Yukon, Oklahoma, has announced that it now accepts payments in Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC), Ethereum (ETH), and other cryptocurrencies for its built-to-order, officially licensed vehicles.
Handcrafted American Muscle Meets Crypto
Classic Recreations is a licensed builder by Ford Motor Company and Shelby American, specializing in Ford Mustang restorations and continuation cars. The company has been in business for over 15 years, and each vehicle requires approximately four months (nearly 2,500 man-hours) of handcrafted work. Owner Jason Engel stated, “My entire life I have had a strong fascination for technology and its evolution. Cryptocurrencies have come a long way and continue to solidify themselves as a legitimate currency on the global market. The true beauty of accepting cryptocurrency is the universal aspect of it which allows Classic Recreations to connect with consumers from anywhere in the world.”
Not Just Whales Buying Cars with Bitcoin
Buying luxury cars with Bitcoin has long been a symbol of wealth among early adopters, from Teslas to Lamborghinis and even fleets of F1 supercars. However, it's not just whales who are paying with crypto. In Japan, where Bitcoin payments are more widespread due to friendly regulations, even used cars have been sold for Bitcoin since as early as November 2017. Several Japanese automotive groups, including one of the largest in the country, enabled Bitcoin payments at their dealerships nationwide.
Classic Recreations' decision aligns with a broader trend of traditional industries embracing cryptocurrency payments. While the company did not disclose the specific payment processor or whether it converts crypto to fiat instantly, the move highlights the growing use of digital assets in high-value transactions. The combination of American muscle car culture and cryptocurrency could appeal to a niche but passionate audience.
This article was originally published on July 4, 2018, and Classic Recreations continues to accept cryptocurrency to this day. If you had the funds, would you buy a Lambo, a Mustang, or just hodl?
