Early Bitcoin contributor and cypherpunk Amir Taaki said on X that he was expelled from Singapore after being questioned by police for six hours about 「the work I do」. Taaki, a British-Iranian programmer, said he has repeatedly run into trouble with some countries since traveling to Syria years ago to fight alongside the Kurdish People’s Protection Units. He added that, in the past year alone, he was also expelled by Argentina and Mexico, and detained in Serbia and Japan. According to Taaki, authorities have not given him specific reasons in such cases, instead describing them as random checks. He wrote that he appears to be on some kind of list, but has been unable to find any information showing which country, if any, has sanctioned him. Taaki is known for long-running work on Bitcoin privacy, including early implementations of CoinJoin and stealth addresses. He also created libbitcoin, founded the UK’s first Bitcoin exchange, wrote BIP 0001, which established the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal process, and is currently developing the privacy-focused crypto protocol DarkFi.
Early Bitcoin contributor and cypherpunk Amir Taaki said on X that Singapore police questioned him for six hours about 「the work I do」 before expelling him from the country.
Taaki, a British-Iranian programmer, said he has continued to face problems with some countries since traveling to Syria years ago to fight alongside the Kurdish People’s Protection Units. In the past year alone, he said, he was also expelled by Argentina and Mexico, and detained in Serbia and Japan.
He said that each time this happens, he asks for the reason, but authorities usually describe it as a random check and do not provide a specific explanation for the detention or questioning. 「I’m on a list, but I can’t find any information about which country has sanctioned me,」 Taaki wrote.
Taaki has long focused on Bitcoin privacy. He wrote some of the earliest implementations of CoinJoin and stealth addresses, created libbitcoin, founded the UK’s first Bitcoin exchange, and authored BIP 0001, which set out the process for Bitcoin Improvement Proposals. He is currently developing the crypto privacy protocol DarkFi.
