Amp has rolled out a free Hobby tier that allows users to run its coding agent on their own computers by connecting either their own ChatGPT subscription or a model API key. Users no longer need to pay an extra monthly subscription fee or separate BYOK token charges to do that.
Amp is a coding agent company spun out of Sourcegraph. Its product sits in the same category as Claude Code and Codex, letting AI read code, edit code, run commands and execute tests.
Amp removes two layers of charges
After Amp introduced its subscription model in July this year, users who wanted to plug their own ChatGPT subscription into Amp had to subscribe to at least the $20-per-month Megawatt plan.
Under its BYOK model, Amp also charged extra token fees and imposed limits even when users brought their own model key. Those two layers have now been removed.
Users still have to pay for the underlying ChatGPT subscription or any model costs tied to API usage.
Orb remains usage-based
Amp also offers a remote cloud computer product called Orb. It can spin up a separate environment for each task, with code and development tools stored inside that environment. That means an agent can keep working after a user shuts down their own computer, and it also makes it easier to run multiple tasks at the same time.
Orb will still be billed based on usage. Users who do not want to pay for Orb can run Amp directly on their own machines instead.
BYOK support is expanding
Amp is also widening BYOK support. Paid users can already connect OpenRouter, Amazon Bedrock, Azure Foundry, Ollama Cloud and custom model endpoints. The company said that access will later be opened to all users.
