Stripe said on Aug. 19, 2026 that it had reached an agreement to acquire OpenRouter in what would be the company’s largest acquisition to date. The final price was not disclosed, though media reports placed the deal at more than $7 billion to $8 billion, with The New York Times citing roughly $7.5 billion. That figure stands in sharp contrast to OpenRouter’s roughly $1.3 billion Series B valuation just 83 days earlier, implying a near sixfold repricing in less than three months. The PANews analysis argues that OpenRouter has already proved one thing at scale: inference demand can be aggregated across hundreds of models and dozens of compute providers. The company says it handles more than 400 trillion monthly tokens, serves more than 10 million global users, connects 80-plus suppliers and 500-plus models, and supports more than 250,000 apps reaching over 4.2 million end users. Yet the same OpenAI-compatible standard that helped OpenRouter grow also keeps switching costs extremely low, since developers can often leave by changing a base URL and API key. In that framing, Stripe is not simply buying an API gateway. It is betting that OpenRouter can evolve from a replaceable middleware layer into a control point that links model routing, telemetry, agent identity, budgeting, metering and settlement. Whether that transition happens is presented as the central question behind the deal.

Amp has introduced a free Hobby tier that lets users run its coding agent on their own computers by connecting either a personal ChatGPT subscription or a model API key. The move removes two charges that had applied under Amp’s subscription model: the need to pay for at least the $20-per-month Megawatt plan to use a personal ChatGPT subscription inside Amp, and extra BYOK token fees and limits even when users supplied their own model key. Amp said users still need to cover the underlying ChatGPT subscription cost or any API model charges themselves. The company, which was spun out of Sourcegraph, builds a coding agent product in the same category as Claude Code and Codex, with capabilities that include reading code, editing it, running commands and testing. Amp also said Orb, its remote cloud computer product that provides a separate environment for each task, will continue to be billed based on usage, while broader BYOK support is being expanded from paid users to all users over time.

IOSG, in a lengthy analysis by Jacob Zhao, argues that Hermes Agent’s breakout on OpenRouter came less from a technical leap over OpenClaw and more from timing, product packaging, and a sharper fit with how power users actually want to run personal agents. Hermes, the report says, inherited a market already educated by OpenClaw, then differentiated itself by making delegation feel safer and more practical. That distinction matters: as execution agents such as Claude Code and Codex improve, users may still want a persistent coordinator that stays online, routes work, monitors progress, and absorbs failures without constant supervision. IOSG points to OpenRouter data showing Hermes at 30.5 trillion tokens, ranked first platform-wide and first across Productivity, Coding Agents, Personal Agents, and CLI Agents as of Aug. 4, 2026, while noting that the leaderboard does not capture all direct API usage. The piece also links Hermes’ rise to Nous Research’s broader stack — Hermes models, DisTrO, Psyche, and Hermes Agent — and to a crypto-native operating model that stays largely invisible at the product layer. In IOSG’s framing, the real contest ahead is whether Hermes can own long-term task context, approval rules, memory, and cross-agent workflows before model vendors and cloud platforms absorb those functions into their own control planes.
