The cryptocurrency philanthropy scene witnessed a massive contribution as the anonymous Bitcoin whale known as 'Pine,' operating the Pineapple Fund, announced a $5 million Bitcoin donation to the nonprofit GiveDirectly. The funds will finance unconditional cash transfers to families living on less than $0.65 per day in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, serving as seed capital for the impoverished.
Pineapple Seeds: Transparent Philanthropy
GiveDirectly, backed by Google and other tech benefactors, is renowned for its rigorous analytical approach, achieving a 91% efficiency rate — meaning most of the donation reaches recipients directly. This donation will support around 1,000 households with monthly cash payments of approximately $20 for 12 months, allowing them to decide how best to spend the money on food, shelter, education, or small businesses.
Earlier in December 2017, Pineapple Fund had already donated to six other charities: Watsi ($1 million), The Water Project ($1 million), Electronic Frontier Foundation ($1 million), BitGive Foundation ($500,000), MAPS for psychedelic studies ($1 million), and Open BSD Foundation ($500,000). With this new commitment, the total distributed by the fund surpasses $20 million, originating from an initial pool of roughly $86 million in Bitcoin.
Testing Universal Basic Income
Beyond direct aid, the GiveDirectly program serves as a real-world experiment for Universal Basic Income (UBI). Unlike traditional welfare systems that often impose conditions, UBI provides guaranteed income with no strings attached, aiming to avoid the 'poverty trap' where recipients lose support if they start earning more. This approach has gained traction as a potential solution to technological unemployment caused by automation.
By conducting the trial in low-income countries where operational costs are minimal, GiveDirectly can gather longitudinal data on the behavioral and economic impacts of unconditional cash. The study includes a control group to compare outcomes in education, entrepreneurship, health, and mental well-being. Results could inform global social policy debates, especially as automation threatens jobs worldwide.
The Pineapple Fund's anonymous donor stated: 'True wealth is about giving hands to those less fortunate. Bitcoin enables borderless charity, where goodwill can reach the neediest instantly.' This initiative sets a precedent for other crypto whales to leverage their digital fortunes for measurable social impact, highlighting the transparency and efficiency of blockchain-based philanthropy.
