Anthropic said it is donating the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation, an organization under the Linux Foundation. The format was originally designed during development of Claude Code, launched in October 2025, and opened in December that year as a cross-platform standard. Anthropic said more than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, have already integrated it. The company describes Skills as reusable work manuals for AI agents, allowing developers to place task instructions in a SKILL.md file alongside scripts and reference materials. Anthropic also said MCP is used to connect external tools and data, while Skills explains how an agent should complete a specific job. The donation covers the standard’s name, branding, GitHub organization, and official website domain. AAIF, founded in 2025 by Anthropic, OpenAI, and Block, had previously received MCP. Going forward, engineers from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google will maintain the Skills standard in their personal capacities rather than under Anthropic’s sole direction. Vercel said the skills.sh directory lists about 1 million skills with nearly 280 million installs, while Snyk identified 76 malicious skills in ClawHub samples. Anthropic has proposed versioning, a formal proposal process, and security guidance.

The format was designed by Anthropic while building Claude Code. It launched in October 2025 and was opened in December as a cross-platform standard. Anthropic said more than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, have already integrated it.
Anthropic describes a Skill as a reusable work manual for an AI agent. Developers can write task steps into a SKILL.md file and attach scripts and reference materials so different agents can read them as needed.
In Anthropic’s description, MCP handles connections to external tools and data, while Skills explains how an agent should complete a specific task.
The assets being donated include the standard’s name, logo, GitHub organization, and official website domain. AAIF was launched in 2025 by Anthropic, OpenAI, and Block, and it had previously received MCP.
Anthropic also said engineers from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google will maintain the Skills standard in their personal capacities going forward, instead of Anthropic leading it alone.
According to Vercel, the skills.sh directory now includes about 1 million skills and has recorded nearly 280 million installs.
On security, Snyk previously confirmed 76 malicious skills in samples from ClawHub. Anthropic has proposed version management, a formal proposal process, and security guidelines.
