Anthropic has introduced Claude Tag, a new Slack integration that places AI directly inside team channels. Users can assign work by tagging @Claude, letting the system operate inside the existing flow of conversation instead of moving people into a separate interface. Anthropic’s product team said that during internal testing, 65% of code was generated by an internal version of Claude Tag.
From one-to-one assistants to a shared channel teammate
The main shift is structural. Claude Tag is designed as a shared AI presence for an entire channel rather than a personal assistant tied to one employee. Everyone in the same Slack channel interacts with the same @Claude, and the status of tasks, prior discussion, and ongoing context stay visible to the group. If one person leaves a task unfinished, another can continue from the same thread without restating the background.
Anthropic is also pushing channel-level memory as a core feature. Claude Tag keeps track of what a channel has been discussing over time, including decisions that have already been made and items that remain unresolved. For new members joining a channel, that means they can ask @Claude for context instead of reading through months of old messages.
Built for asynchronous work across shifts and days
Anthropic describes Claude Tag as an asynchronous work tool. A user can hand off a task before leaving for the day and check the output the next morning. According to the company’s description, the system can plan work steps on its own and continue operating across different time periods and dates, without requiring a person to stay present for each exchange.
The model paired with the product is Opus 4.8, which Anthropic identifies as its most capable version. The rationale is straightforward: tasks that require independent planning, multi-step execution, and long-running continuity depend on more than speed. They require stable interpretation of complex instructions and consistency across a sequence of actions.
Channel isolation and admin controls are part of the rollout
Anthropic says Claude Tag keeps separate identities for different channels. The same Claude in a sales channel and an engineering channel does not share memory, tool access, or conversation context. In practice, that means a sales team’s @Claude would not know what the engineering team is fixing, while the engineering version would not see details from customer contract negotiations.
Administrative controls are also built in at the channel level. Admins can set boundaries for tool access, limit what data can be read, and define token usage caps. That gives enterprise IT teams a way to introduce the tool with tighter control instead of opening permissions all at once.
Anthropic is moving beyond the individual developer workflow
The product positioning shows a broader push. Claude Code targets individual engineers working in terminals with a tightly integrated coding assistant. Claude Tag moves to the organizational layer, where task assignment, progress tracking, and accumulated context sit inside Slack channels that already function as a company’s operational backbone.
For now, the beta version of Claude Tag is available only to Claude Enterprise and Team customers, with eligible organizations receiving startup credits. Anthropic also said the existing Claude in Slack app will be replaced, and current users will have a 30-day migration window.
