Argentine lawmakers are escalating their fight against federal prosecutor Eduardo Taiano, who is leading the investigation into the controversial Libra cryptocurrency incident. After newly released data revealed deeper ties between President Javier Milei and Mauricio Novelli, a key figure behind the token launch, the congressional commission that probed the case is now moving to remove Taiano from office.
Two Complaints Filed Against Prosecutor
The commission has prepared two formal complaints against Taiano. The first accuses him of obstructing congressional work by rejecting a request that would force government officials to clarify their connections to the token, and by denying the commission access to case files that were recently made public. The second complaint is more serious, alleging that Taiano has been covering up evidence to protect President Milei, his sister Karian Milei, and others in the presidential circle.
Maximiliano Ferraro, former president of the commission, went further, directly calling President Milei a “protagonist and necessary participant” in what he described as a “multi-million-dollar act of corruption and misappropriation of the presidential office.” In a social media post, Ferraro stated: “There was direct coordination between fringe operators within the crypto world and the President of the Nation’s inner circle, who leveraged his office and power to promote the cryptocurrency in exchange for payments amounting to millions.”
Demands for Transparency and Interpellation
Ferraro also called for the disclosure of all communications between President Milei, his sister Karina, former Chief of Staff Demian Reidel, advisor Santiago Caputo, and Mauricio Novelli on the day of Libra’s launch. Additionally, the commission will push for the interpellation of Cabinet Chief Manuel Adorni and Secretary Karina Milei.
The case is reaching a breaking point, with Taiano at the center of the storm. Earlier, investigators recovered a draft of a $5 million economic agreement from a seized phone, allegedly intended to secure President Milei’s support for Libra. This revelation has intensified calls for accountability.
Opposition lawmakers argue that if the judiciary fails to deliver impartial justice, Congress must use all available tools to uphold the rule of law. The coming days will determine whether Taiano can survive the political assault or be forced to step aside.
