Taiwan Enacts First Crypto Asset Service Law, Ushering in VASP Licensing Era
On July 2, 2026, Taiwan officially passed its first comprehensive law governing crypto asset services. The legislation requires all Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) to apply for and hold a license before conducting any business. Regulators have set tough penalties—unlicensed operations face fines of up to NT$50 million or corresponding criminal liability. The law aims to strengthen anti-money laundering (AML) practices and customer asset protection, marking a transition from administrative guidance to formal legal regulation in Taiwan.
Industry analysts believe this legislation will accelerate the compliance process in Taiwan's crypto market. Exchanges and wallet services previously operating in a gray area must complete licensing within a prescribed period or be forced to exit. Higher compliance costs may drive small platforms toward mergers, acquisitions, or closure. In Asia, Taiwan joins Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan as jurisdictions with a full crypto licensing regime.
Binance Enters Philippine Market Through Regulatory Sandbox
Binance announced a collaboration with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to enter the local crypto market via a regulatory sandbox. This means Binance's operations in the Philippines will be supervised and tested by local regulators, rather than operating without a license. The move is seen as a key step in Binance's compliance strategy across Asia, following regulatory pressure in multiple markets worldwide.
The Philippines has high crypto adoption rates in Southeast Asia, with significant on-chain trading and remittance demand. The sandbox allows Binance to offer compliant services—including spot trading and fiat on/off ramps—to Filipino users for a limited period. Successfully passing the sandbox testing could lead to a full operational license, establishing a long-term base in the Philippine market. This also sets a precedent for other international exchanges pursuing compliant strategies in similar jurisdictions.
Japanese Listed Firm Metaplanet Adds 2,823 BTC, Total Holdings Hit New Record
Metaplanet (formerly known as Chiyu Technology), a Japanese listed company, announced the acquisition of 2,823 bitcoins in Q2 2026, bringing its total holdings to an all-time high. Since 2024, Metaplanet has adopted bitcoin as its core reserve asset, continuously accumulating through bond issuance and internal funds. This purchase is roughly the sum of previous quarters, reflecting strong conviction in bitcoin's long-term value.
Following the news, Metaplanet shares rose approximately 12% in early trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The trend of institutional bitcoin accumulation is gaining traction in Asia, with Metaplanet's move seen by some investors as a hedge against yen depreciation and inflation. As Asian institutions increase their bitcoin allocation, price volatility during Asian trading hours may amplify further.
