The Babylon Foundation has officially announced the launch of its native BABY token, including an airdrop campaign targeting early backers of its Bitcoin-native staking protocol. The project allows Bitcoin (BTC) holders to stake directly on the Bitcoin blockchain using the UTXO model, without the need for intermediaries or token wrapping, thereby extending Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work security to Proof-of-Stake networks.

Protocol Overview and Scale

As of April 3, 2025, Babylon’s total value locked (TVL) stands at $4.26 billion, according to DefiLlama. This figure underscores the protocol’s significant traction in the DeFi ecosystem. The BABY token serves as the governance and utility token for the Babylon network, enabling holders to vote on proposals, pay transaction fees, and secure the network through staking.

Tokenomics and Distribution

The initial supply of BABY is capped at 10 billion tokens. The protocol features a dual staking model: both Bitcoin stakers and BABY stakers earn a 4% annual inflation reward denominated in BABY. Token allocation breaks down as follows: community rewards 15%, ecosystem development 18%, research and development 18%, early investors 30.5% (3.05 billion BABY), team 15%, and advisors 3.5%.

Vesting and Unlock Schedule

Early investors will unlock 12.5% of their allocation after a one-year cliff, with the remainder vesting linearly over three years. Team tokens vest over four years with a one-year cliff, while advisor tokens follow a similar timeline. Allocations for ecosystem development and R&D will unlock in phases, with some portions eligible for immediate staking to bootstrap network security.

Strategic Implications

Babylon’s approach addresses a core challenge in decentralized finance: utilizing Bitcoin’s dormant security to secure PoS chains. The BABY token launch formalizes the project’s ambition to bridge Bitcoin’s infrastructure with other blockchain networks. The success of this model will test whether Bitcoin’s security can be integrated effectively with staking-based protocols, potentially unlocking new use cases for the world’s largest cryptocurrency.
