The Bank of Russia has registered the country’s first digital asset operators under new rules that took effect on Sept. 1. The regulator added five companies to its digital asset custody register and four companies to its cryptocurrency exchange register. Sberbank was approved as one of the new custodians, while VTB appeared in both categories. The move follows a law signed by President Vladimir Putin in August that created a formal framework for cryptocurrency exchanges, custodians, brokers and investors, with the central bank assigned as the market regulator. Sberbank has already started preparing products for the new market and plans to launch its first cryptocurrency services on Dec. 1, with expected support for Bitcoin, Ether and USDT. The central bank said approved companies must comply with the new trading rules and bring their operations fully in line with the regulations by Sept. 1, 2027.
