Binance has announced the completion of its Lightning Network integration, enabling users to deposit and withdraw bitcoin through the Bitcoin scaling layer. The move gives users access to faster transfers and lower fees, benefits that become especially relevant during periods of congestion on Bitcoin’s base layer.
BTC deposits and withdrawals now supported
According to Binance, users can now choose the Lightning Network for bitcoin deposits and withdrawals on the exchange. Unlike standard on-chain BTC transfers, which typically require block confirmations, Lightning transactions can be processed more quickly because they operate on a Layer 2 framework built on top of Bitcoin. The fee structure is also generally cheaper than using the main chain directly.
For deposits, Binance said it accepts Lightning transactions starting at 0.00001 BTC and up to 0.05 BTC. For withdrawals, the exchange charges a network fee of 0.000002 BTC, which the source described as less than $0.10 per transaction. That makes the option particularly relevant for smaller and more frequent BTC transfers.
Why Binance moved ahead with integration
The exchange first said in May that it was working on Lightning support after it had to pause BTC withdrawals during a period of network congestion. At the time, pressure on the Bitcoin network was linked in part to the rise of the Ordinals protocol, which allows arbitrary data to be inscribed on the Bitcoin blockchain.
In response, Binance said it had adjusted its fees to reduce the risk of similar disruptions and would continue monitoring on-chain activity. It also stated that its team was working on enabling BTC Lightning withdrawals to help manage such situations in the future.
By June, some users had noticed Lightning nodes associated with Binance, but the company said more technical work still needed to be completed. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao had previously noted that Lightning integration was more complex than it might seem, partly because the network relies on invoice generation on demand rather than the pre-generated address model commonly used in standard crypto deposit systems.
What this means for users
The rollout shows how major exchanges are increasingly turning to Bitcoin Layer 2 infrastructure to improve asset transfer efficiency and reduce the impact of base-layer congestion. For users, Lightning is especially suited to smaller and faster BTC transfers. For Binance, the integration represents a practical step toward improving the overall bitcoin deposit and withdrawal experience on its platform.
