Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has officially launched 'Send Cash', a remittance service tailored for Latin America. The new tool enables users from nine countries—Colombia, Honduras, Guatemala, Argentina, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Panama, and Mexico—to send cryptocurrency directly to the bank accounts of friends or family in Argentina and Colombia, bypassing traditional intermediaries.
First Phase Focus on Argentina and Colombia
According to Binance's press release, the service leverages licensed transfer processing providers to convert crypto into fiat and deposit it directly into recipients' bank accounts. This eliminates the need for recipients to use third-party exchanges, making the process seamless even for non-crypto-savvy users. Binance indicated that Argentina and Colombia are part of the 'first stage,' hinting at expansion to other countries in the region.
Driving Financial Inclusion
Min Lin, Binance's Regional Vice President for Latin America, stated: 'This is another step forward for Binance, which renews its commitment to the crypto industry in Latin America, to the expansion of the benefits it offers in terms of financial inclusion, and to developing new ways of using crypto in everyday life.' He noted that individuals and startups in the region have shown strong interest in such solutions, and Binance will continue to adapt its products to local needs.
Headwinds: Mastercard Partnership Termination
Despite the positive move, Binance faces challenges in the region. Mastercard recently decided to terminate its relationship with Binance, leading to the suspension of Binance's card services in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia starting September 22. This development underscores the persistent friction between crypto-native services and traditional financial infrastructure.
Strategic Significance for Latam
Latin America has long struggled with high remittance costs, inflation, and limited banking access. By enabling direct crypto-to-bank transfers, Send Cash reduces fees and accelerates transaction times. The service bridges the gap between crypto users and traditional banking, potentially driving broader adoption across the region. Binance's move aligns with its broader strategy to embed crypto into everyday financial life, despite regulatory and partnership hurdles.
