Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire CoinMarketCap (CMC), the leading cryptocurrency data aggregator, for approximately $400 million in a combination of cash and stock. According to sources familiar with the matter, the deal could be announced as early as this week, marking what would be the largest acquisition ever in the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry.
Binance's Expanding Empire
Founded by Changpeng Zhao (CZ) and Yi He in 2017, Binance has grown rapidly, becoming the top global exchange by trading volume in 2018. The company has since acquired Indian exchange WazirX, Beijing-based Dappreview, derivatives platform JEX, Mars Finance, and mobile wallet Trust Wallet. Adding CoinMarketCap to its portfolio would give Binance significant influence over market data and user traffic.
CoinMarketCap, ranked 570th globally on Alexa and 819th in the United States, attracts millions of monthly visitors from countries including the U.S., India, and Brazil. The reported $400 million price tag far exceeds the $121 million raised by 21 Inc. (later Earn.com), underscoring the scale of this potential acquisition.
Controversies and Community Concerns
CoinMarketCap's history is not without controversy. Founder Brandon Chez remained anonymous until being doxxed by The Wall Street Journal in January 2018. The site faced criticism in early January 2018 for removing South Korean exchange rates, and its reported trading volumes have often differed from “real” or on-chain data tracked by alternatives like Messari.
If Binance acquires CMC, many worry about compromised neutrality. Social media erupted with skepticism. One Twitter user wrote: “I don’t like it at all — I guess I’ll continue to use my favorite CMC alternatives.” Another commented: “CMC has been bad for years — The amount of scams they’ve allowed to advertise on their site has been awful. Hopefully [CZ] changes that.” Some joked: “Binance buying CMC — How long until BNB and Tron are #1 and #2 and Digibyte is delisted?”
What’s Next?
Neither Binance nor CoinMarketCap has officially commented, though CZ recently hinted at upcoming acquisitions he was “very excited” about. If completed, the deal would give Binance control over a critical data source used by millions, raising questions about market manipulation and centralization. The acquisition highlights the ongoing consolidation in the crypto industry and the growing importance of data integrity.
