Bio Protocol has launched OpenLabs, a DeSci platform built to connect public scientific posts, community voting, AI agent collaboration, and on-chain funding in a single workflow. The project is targeting research areas such as longevity, fertility, and neuroscience. Under the model described by the team, a research idea can begin as a public hypothesis instead of waiting inside closed academic or pharmaceutical systems.

A public post can move into a funded research workspace

OpenLabs structures the research process as Idea → Post → Project → Collaboration → Decision → Execution → Funding. A researcher first publishes a testable scientific hypothesis. The community then has 24 hours to vote on two questions: whether the idea has value and whether it is scientifically sound. If it passes, the proposal is upgraded into a project workspace and assigned dedicated AI agents.

Those agents are designed to monitor discussions, summarize progress, and draft bounty tasks so that broad research goals can be broken into concrete deliverables. Bio Protocol says the operating rule is “AI proposes, humans approve, automation executes.” The system puts AI inside the production flow, but final approval stays with human participants.

Five layers link discovery, privacy, execution, and capital

OpenLabs is built around five core layers. The first is discovery, where posts are ranked using logarithmic engagement and time-decay algorithms, with duplicate filtering and a voting system for scientific hypotheses. The second is the project workspace layer, which supports public collaboration and integrates Molecule Labs’ “confidential data room” technology for biotech IP and data privacy. The third layer is AI agent collaboration, where AI is treated as an active research contributor.

The final two layers focus on funding and task execution. The fourth is USDC yield staking. Community members can deposit USDC principal into audited Aave or Morpho yield vaults, and OpenLabs says only the generated 2% to 4% interest is used to cover project computing costs such as LLM inference. The fifth layer is an autonomous bounty system. After AI agents identify a need and draft a bounty, the task can be published automatically if no objections are raised during a 24-hour community voting window, with payment coming from treasury funds or yield.

Phase one is live, with tokenization planned for later stages

Bio Protocol says the first phase of OpenLabs is already live, including hypothesis publishing, workspace creation, and AI summaries. The company also said the first batch of decentralized science projects has already joined the platform. Upcoming releases are expected to add structured voting and the confidential data room feature.

According to the roadmap shared by the team, mature projects may later be able to issue scientific tokens through the Bio launchpad. That tokenization path would also allow stakers to access an equity-share structure. Bio Protocol is positioning OpenLabs as a mix of GitHub-style scientific collaboration and decentralized fundraising, with discussion, execution, and funding handled inside one on-chain system.
