Bitbase Chief Business Officer Nicholas Lo said crypto trading platforms now function as a "weekend market" for traditional assets, with price discovery often happening there while conventional markets are closed. He made the remarks during the "Digital Economy Infrastructure" roundtable hosted by HSC Asset Management Singapore. According to Lo, news that breaks during market closures is frequently priced first on crypto venues rather than in traditional markets. He also pointed out a key limitation: much of that activity takes place through leveraged perpetual contracts, meaning traders are not actually holding the underlying assets. Lo said the main challenge lies in weekend price formation and in handling gap-risk protection when traditional markets reopen on Monday. In his view, those conditions call for a higher standard in how such trading is managed.
