Ethereum researchers are warning bitcoin and ether holders to shift into what they described as a form of "bunker mode" as artificial intelligence may pose a threat to the cryptographic signatures that protect major blockchain assets. According to CoinDesk, the warning covers bitcoin, ether, and tokens built on top of those networks. The researchers said that, in a worst-case scenario, AI could break those signature systems in "months, not years." They also said such a development could arrive well before quantum computers become the main threat many in crypto have long focused on. The report was written by Shaurya Malwa and edited by Stephen Alpher, with publication dated Oct. 8, 2026.

Warning centers on signature security

According to CoinDesk, the researchers said AI could break the signatures that protect bitcoin, ether, and the tokens built on top of those networks "in months, not years" in a worst-case scenario. They warned that this could happen well before quantum computers arrive as a practical threat.

The report was written by Shaurya Malwa and edited by Stephen Alpher. CoinDesk published it on Oct. 8, 2026.
