While U.S. tech stocks remain resilient, the cryptocurrency market continues to struggle. Quinn Thompson, CIO of Lekker Capital, warns that Bitcoin is flashing multiple warning signals, leading his fund to maintain a bearish stance and recommend returning after summer.
Multiple Structural Headwinds Hit Bitcoin
Thompson points to several structural issues: lingering concerns over digital asset reserve companies, uncertainty surrounding Strategy's preferred stock STRC, and growing fears about quantum computing threatening Bitcoin's security. These factors, combined with heavy selling pressure and deteriorating liquidity, have caused Bitcoin to underperform tech stocks significantly, creating the most severe decoupling in recent years.
IPO Wave Could Absorb Trillions
His concerns extend beyond crypto. Thompson argues that capital markets are poised for an unprecedented IPO wave—super unicorns like SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI going public could absorb trillions of dollars of investor capital, further draining market liquidity. Another clear signal: the "Magnificent Seven" tech stocks have recently lagged the Nasdaq composite. Historically, healthy bull markets are led by these leaders; but now the indexes are being driven by semiconductor equipment and AI supply chain stocks, not the hyperscale data center operators that initially sparked the rally.
Data Center Operators Face Capital Squeeze
These large data center operators face growing challenges: massive capital expenditures for AI are squeezing cash flows, raising debt levels, and forcing reductions in share buybacks. Cutting spending to improve financials could in turn hurt the semiconductor and AI infrastructure stocks supporting the broader tech market. Thompson concludes that the coming IPO wave will compete for limited capital and investor attention, making the path ahead rocky for both AI leaders and the broader financial market.
