Bitcoin Magazine has released the editor’s letter for its latest print edition, The Quantum Issue, with the piece arguing that a viable, actually functioning quantum computer would pose an existential threat to Bitcoin.

The letter says one of Bitcoin’s bedrock assumptions is the existence of a working cryptographic system that can produce unforgeable signatures. Under that model, if someone follows the protocol correctly when signing, no one other than the rightful owner of a bitcoin should be able to generate the signature needed to spend it, unless that owner failed to protect a private key from theft.
According to the editor, quantum computers would break that assumption. If that happens, the integrity of the mechanism Bitcoin uses to let owners authenticate their holdings, and for the protocol to process only legitimately authorized transactions, would no longer hold. In the letter’s framing, if that assumption fails, meaningful ownership inside the Bitcoin protocol breaks with it.
The piece also points to what it describes as the good news: not every cryptographic system depends on assumptions that quantum computing can defeat. But the editor adds that every available path comes with tradeoffs, none is ideal, and difficult choices still have to be made. In that sense, the article argues that solutions exist for nearly every problem a viable quantum computer would create, except for the problem of deciding which solutions should be used.
How the issue is organized
Bitcoin Magazine says this edition is more structured than many of its previous issues. The stated goal is to guide readers through both the problem space and the solution space without assuming prior understanding, since quantum security is a deep and technical subject.
The first group of articles focuses on quantum computing itself: how it differs from classical computing, why that difference matters, and how likely it is that such a machine is developed soon.
The second group examines Bitcoin’s exposure. That includes where the network is exposed, how severe that exposure is, and how the degree of exposure could change.
The third group looks at concrete solutions, or approaches developed enough that they are not far from becoming concrete, for securing bitcoin in a quantum-safe way and handling a network-wide migration to those solutions.
Bitcoin Magazine also says the issue features articles by influential figures working on pieces needed for what it calls a post-quantum Bitcoin.
This article is the editor’s letter from the latest print edition of Bitcoin Magazine, The Quantum Issue. The publication said it was sharing the text online as an early look at the ideas covered across the full issue. The piece first appeared on Bitcoin Magazine and is credited to Shinobi.
