Major Bitcoin mining firms are selling down their BTC treasuries to reinvest in AI infrastructure. MARA Holdings may part with its $4B stash, Bitdeer fully liquidated, and Core Scientific plans a Q1 2026 sell-off. The shift reflects miners chasing stable contracted revenue over volatile mining margins.

A growing number of top Bitcoin mining companies are quietly offloading their BTC reserves, with proceeds flowing straight into artificial intelligence (AI) data center buildouts. A Bloomberg report highlights that miners controlling over $8 billion in Bitcoin collectively have begun monetizing digital assets, driven by shareholder pressure, rising energy costs, and shrinking mining margins.

MARA Holdings: $4B Treasury at Risk

MARA Holdings, formerly Marathon Digital and one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders with nearly $4 billion in BTC, has signaled it may sell part of its treasury to fund AI infrastructure. The move marks a dramatic reversal for a firm that once championed the “hold forever” strategy.

Riot, Cleanspark Restructure; Bitdeer Fully Exits Bitcoin

Riot Platforms and Cleanspark have reorganized leadership teams to accelerate AI initiatives, though neither has announced a public sale plan. Bitdeer Technologies went further, liquidating its entire Bitcoin stash to go all-in on AI computing rental. Core Scientific plans to sell most of its BTC in Q1 2026, with proceeds earmarked for an AI expansion.

The Math: Mining vs. AI on 1 Megawatt

The economic rationale is straightforward. A megawatt of electricity devoted to mining yields returns tied to Bitcoin price, network difficulty, and the halving cycle — factors miners cannot control. The same energy used for AI workloads can generate contracted revenue with far greater predictability. Bitcoin’s price has fallen more than 40% from its October 2025 all-time high near $126,000, recently rebounding above $70,000. The volatility is pushing miners toward more stable cash flows.

Analysts see the sell-off as strategic repositioning, not distress. Miners sit on vast energy capacity and land assets that can be repurposed for AI compute leasing, a path with lower friction than fighting unpredictable mining margins. In the short term, miner selling may add supply pressure on Bitcoin; in the long run, it signals deeper integration between crypto infrastructure and emerging technology.
