Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) has released an open letter, co-signed by multiple crypto companies and institutions, urging frontier AI labs to provide Bitcoin and open-source developers with early access to their strongest models to support cybersecurity efforts. The letter says digital asset defenders, including Bitcoin Core developers, lack access to labs' security programs and may be affected by safety limits on public frontier systems, forcing reliance on weaker open-weight models. It suggests establishing or expanding long-term trusted access programs for defenders of open-source financial infrastructure. Signatories include African Bitcoin Institute, Anchorage Digital, BitGo, Bitwise, Blockstream, Bull Bitcoin, MARA, Kraken, Ledger, and Trezor. The open letter also stresses that open-source software underpins critical financial infrastructure, with Bitcoin securing over $1 trillion in value. Separately, the report notes that crypto platforms suffered over $634 million in thefts in April 2026, the highest monthly figure since the Bybit hack, while related losses in February 2025 were about $1.4 billion.

Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) published an open letter on Monday, joined by a group of crypto companies and institutions, calling on frontier AI labs to give Bitcoin and open-source developers early access to their strongest models for cybersecurity work.

The letter says digital-asset defenders, including Bitcoin Core developers, have been locked out of labs' security programs and could also be subject to safety restrictions on public frontier systems, leaving them dependent on less capable open-weight models. It goes on to note that open-source software supports critical digital and financial infrastructure, and that Bitcoin alone safeguards more than $1 trillion in value, meaning a bug could put people's life savings at risk.

To fix that, the letter recommends that frontier AI labs establish or expand long-term trusted access programs for defenders of open-source financial infrastructure who meet certain criteria.

Signatories include African Bitcoin Institute, Anchorage Digital, BitGo, Bitwise, Blockstream, Bull Bitcoin, MARA, Kraken, Ledger and Trezor, among other crypto firms and organizations.

The report cites that in April 2026, crypto platforms lost more than $634 million to theft, the highest monthly amount since the Bybit hack. Related losses stood at roughly $1.4 billion in February 2025.
