Bitcoin Red Team, a volunteer security group of 16 members, found 4,962 potential issues across 390 Bitcoin ecosystem projects within 29.8 hours using AI-assisted review. Among them, 720 were rated high or critical severity, with 21.4% reproducible. The review followed the Coldcard hardware wallet incident, which saw over $100 million in Bitcoin stolen.

Bitcoin Red Team, a volunteer security group comprising 16 members, said it uncovered nearly 5,000 potential issues during a rapid AI-assisted review of Bitcoin ecosystem projects.

Scope and Findings

The group includes AnchorWatch CEO Rob Hamilton and Bitcoin developer Calle. Calle said the team combined AI tools with manual verification to scan open-source codebases tied to Bitcoin, finding roughly one critical vulnerability per person per hour on average.

Within 29.8 hours of launch, the team identified 4,962 potential issues across 390 projects. As many as 720 were rated high or critical severity, and 21.4% of the findings have been reproduced so far.

Background

The security review kicked off days after the Coldcard hardware wallet incident, in which stolen Bitcoin was valued at over $100 million.
