Bitget will wind down trading services for residents in Japan, according to a report by CoinDesk. The exchange has already stopped accepting new registrations from Japanese users as of Sunday and set out a compliance timetable for accounts identified as belonging to Japanese residents. Existing users who believe they were wrongly classified must complete level-two identity verification and submit proof of address by Nov. 1. If they fail to do so, their accounts will be moved to close-only mode from that date. Under that restriction, users will not be able to open new positions or access spot trading, futures trading, copy trading, trading bots, or yield products, though deposits and withdrawals will still be available within the stated limits. Bitget said it plans to force-close all remaining positions by Dec. 31, 2026, and will also suspend bank card services at that time. Asset withdrawals will remain available afterward. The company said the move is intended to comply with local regulatory requirements in Japan, where recent legislation has reclassified crypto assets as financial instruments. According to the report, unregistered crypto platforms operating there could face fines of up to about $62,800 and prison terms of as long as 10 years.

The platform stopped accepting new registrations from Japanese users on Sunday. Existing users who believe they were incorrectly identified as Japanese residents must complete level-two identity verification and submit proof of address by Nov. 1.

Bitget said accounts that do not complete verification will be placed in “close-only mode” starting Nov. 1. Those users will not be able to open new positions or use spot trading, futures trading, copy trading, trading bots, or yield products. Deposits and withdrawals will still be available within the applicable limits.

The exchange said it will force-close all remaining positions on Dec. 31 and suspend bank card services. Users will still be able to withdraw assets after that date.

Bitget said the decision was made to comply with local regulatory requirements in Japan. Japan recently passed legislation that reclassified crypto assets as financial instruments. Under the new framework, unregistered crypto platforms operating in the country could face fines of up to about $62,800 and prison sentences of as long as 10 years.
