A pioneering project named Bitland is being piloted in Kumasi, Ghana, leveraging blockchain technology to build a decentralized land registry system. The initiative seeks to address rampant land ownership disputes and corruption in Africa, where officials and chiefs have been known to alter records arbitrarily. By storing land titles on an immutable distributed ledger, Bitland aims to provide citizens with secure, verifiable proof of ownership and attract foreign investment.

How Bitland Works

Chris Bates, Chief Security Officer of Bitland, explained in an interview with Bitcoin.com that the project records land titles on a blockchain, making it impossible for any individual or authority to change records fraudulently. “Since part of the problem in Ghana is corrupt officials or chiefs changing records or unjustly distributing land, having a public ledger becomes an objective way to keep track of changes,” Bates said. This transparency is expected to stamp out corruption and open Ghana to foreign investors who can trust the oversight system.

In addition to registration, Bitland plans to offer a microloan request system for property owners. Because loans require tracking borrowers to a responsible residence, newly registered lands unlock new investment opportunities. The project remains neutral, representing local interests and preventing government interference.

Token Economy: Cadastrals

Bitland’s native token is called Cadastrals. It is used for all transactions involving proposals for reserve funds or private proposals submitted by Agenda Champions. Every transaction is recorded on the Cadastral chain, ensuring full auditability.

The platform also features a multi-faceted voting system to decide how to allocate the Bitland Reserve. Agenda Champions can submit proposals during limited periods per cycle. A reputation system allows voters to rank champions; those with more accepted proposals earn higher rewards, while those frequently rejected suffer negative reputation. However, reputation does not prevent anyone from submitting new agendas. To prevent deadlocks, a built-in ombudsperson system resolves tie votes through a double-blind process where no party knows the other’s identity.

Crowdsale and Future Plans

Bitland’s crowdsale, ending on June 1, 2016, has received strong contributions. Bates confirmed that the team is already in discussions to expand to other countries for field testing different system aspects. “We are trying to build a working system before we get too far ahead of ourselves,” he noted.

The ultimate mission of Bitland is to unlock land capital worldwide that is currently unusable due to lack of registration, while empowering disenfranchised communities against corrupt governments. Land disputes remain one of the leading global causes of violence; by creating transparent land title tracking, Bitland hopes to reduce conflict and promote development. “We are trying to do something that is at the core humanitarian,” Bates concluded. “Bitand is trying to put the blockchain into the real world, and put the real world into the blockchain.”
