On March 29, 2024, Bitmain unveiled its latest Bitcoin mining rig, the Antminer S21 Pro, at the World Digital Mining Summit (WDMS) in Oman. The new model sets a new efficiency milestone in the ASIC mining industry, boasting a hashrate of 234 TH/s and an energy efficiency of 15 J/T.
Efficiency Breakthrough Over Predecessors
Compared to the previous air-cooled Antminer S21, which delivers 200 TH/s at 17.5 J/T, the S21 Pro achieves a 17% improvement in hashrate and a 14% reduction in power consumption. This leap is made possible by Bitmain's advanced chip design and thermal management. The launch comes just 22 days before the fourth Bitcoin halving, which will reduce block rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC, making efficient miners more critical than ever.
T21 Sold Out and Hydro-Cooling Innovations
Bitmain also disclosed that its Antminer T21 units were completely sold out as of March 19, 2024. The company highlighted the utility of its hydro-cooling solutions, which can repurpose mining waste heat for applications such as fish farming and greenhouse heating. One example is Dongguan Jingyi Trading Co., which operates a hydro-cooled mining facility in Central Asia that simultaneously supports a 3,000-square-meter fish farm raising millions of bass and tilapia.
Pricing and Halving Context
As of Friday, detailed pricing was not available on Bitmain’s website. However, during WDMS, it was announced that the S21 Pro would cost approximately $18.90 per terahash with a coupon, implying a unit price of around $4,422.60. With the halving imminent, high-efficiency miners like the S21 Pro could help miners maintain profitability, while older, less efficient rigs may face retirement.
Bitmain’s latest innovation reinforces its dominance in the ASIC market. The industry now watches closely to see how the S21 Pro will perform post-halving and whether it can reshape the Bitcoin mining landscape.
