BitPay said it has received approval from the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets, securing a crypto-asset service provider license that allows it to operate across European Union member states under the Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. The company said the approval will support a broader push into Europe, including expansion of its crypto payment and stablecoin payment services.
The announcement comes as new compliance requirements take effect in the region. From July 1, all entities offering crypto-related services are required to fall under regulatory supervision, according to the report. BitPay framed the license as a key step for its European business at a time when the bloc is moving toward a more unified regulatory regime for digital asset firms.
Jonathan Arler, BitPay’s head of Europe, said Europe is one of the most important regions for the future of payments. The report also noted that Ripple had previously announced that it obtained a crypto-asset service provider license from Luxembourg’s financial regulator.
