The original BitVM, introduced by Robin Linus in October 2023, enabled Bitcoin to support Turing-complete contracts without altering its consensus rules. However, it was limited to two-party interactions and required substantial off-chain computation. Each operation involved 70 on-chain transactions, making it impractical for complex decentralized applications.
Breakthroughs in BitVM2
The new white paper, co-authored by Linus and several researchers, employs optimistic computation and SNARK verification to drastically reduce on-chain transaction complexity. Key improvements include a permissionless challenge mechanism—any Bitcoin full node can dispute a suspicious transaction, significantly boosting security. Moreover, the number of on-chain transactions is reduced from 70 to just 3, making Bitcoin L2 solutions far more practical and efficient.
BitVMBridge: A Secure Cross-Chain Bridge
A core component of BitVM2 is the BitVMBridge, a protocol for bridging BTC to Bitcoin L2 systems. Compared to existing designs, it minimizes trust assumptions and requires only one active rational operator to maintain security. According to the white paper authors, this innovation not only addresses Bitcoin's scalability challenges but also paves the way for more secure and decentralized cross-chain applications.
