BlackBerry is back in focus, but not because of phones. The company’s return to market attention is being driven by QNX, its software framework for AI and robotics systems, after BlackBerry reported a major earnings beat and lifted its outlook, sending the stock up nearly 23% on Thursday.
Years after stepping away from consumer mobile devices, BlackBerry has reshaped itself around software for what the report describes as “physical AI” and robotics. The company is no longer trying to win through hardware. Its pitch now sits much lower in the stack, inside systems where stability and safety are hard requirements.
QNX is being used in smart vehicles and warehouse robots
At the center of that shift is QNX, a software framework described as effectively “uncrashable.” According to the report, major chip companies including Nvidia and AMD are using BlackBerry software to build smart cars and warehouse robots. QNX is meant to help those machines move safely and without delay, a requirement that becomes critical once autonomy increases.
That matters in machines operating close to people. In those settings, low latency is only part of the equation. Reliability, security and predictable system behavior become deployment conditions, not optional features.
BlackBerry says deterministic software is hard to replace
During the quarterly earnings call, CEO John Giamatteo said that as intelligent machines become more autonomous and operate in close proximity to humans, demands for safety, security, reliability and real-time determinism grow more important. He added that, unlike probabilistic AI systems, QNX technology is deterministic and safety-certified, which is why it is difficult to replicate and trusted in systems where failure is not acceptable.
The distinction is central to BlackBerry’s current positioning. The company is not presenting itself as a model builder. It is selling software for environments where verified behavior and certified safety carry more weight than broad AI capability claims.
From secure communications to software security for AI systems
The report also draws a line back to BlackBerry’s earlier reputation. Its devices were once favored by governments and executives because they were considered secure and difficult to hack. That encryption relied on the same underlying mathematical and cryptographic principles used in modern cryptocurrency, even though the end use was entirely different.
BlackBerry has now extended that security focus into AI systems. While QNX is no longer the same platform it once was, the software still relies heavily on the same cryptographic library. In the current AI cycle, that gives BlackBerry a specific role: not selling the model itself, but the safety and stability layer underneath machines that cannot afford failure.
