Saylor's Prophecy: IBIT to Overtake VOO as World's Largest ETF
At the Bitcoin Standard Corporations Investor Day in New York, Strategy Chairman Michael Saylor made a bold prediction: BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) will become the world's largest ETF within ten years, surpassing the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO). Currently, IBIT manages $54.2 billion in assets, while VOO holds approximately $573.5 billion. Despite the tenfold gap, Saylor highlighted IBIT's unprecedented growth trajectory—since its launch in January, the fund reached $10 billion in assets within just seven weeks, the fastest growth rate for any ETF in history.
Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas acknowledged the feasibility but stressed the extraordinary conditions required. "It's possible if IBIT starts taking in more cash than VOO, but as it stands that would mean taking in well north of $1 billion per day, like $3 billion or $4 billion a day if it hopes to gain ground," Balchunas noted. The analyst's comment underscores the scale of ambition behind Saylor's forecast.
Capital Inflow Accelerates: IBIT Bought $1.16B in Bitcoin in Three Days
On Thursday (July 2), U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $442 million in net inflows, pushing Bitcoin's price above $95,000. IBIT's recent buying spree has been particularly aggressive: over just three days from April 22 to 24, the fund purchased $1.16 billion worth of Bitcoin—$193.5 million on April 22, $643.2 million on April 23, and $327.3 million on April 24. Since their launch in January, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have accumulated over $37 billion in total net inflows, with combined assets under management exceeding $100 billion.
IBIT has also earned industry recognition, recently winning the "Best New ETF" award at the etf.com awards. BlackRock's relentless accumulation strategy signals growing institutional conviction in Bitcoin as a legitimate asset class. The fund's dominant market position continues to attract both retail and institutional investors seeking regulated exposure to cryptocurrency.
Macro Tailwinds Propel Bitcoin Above $95,000
Bitcoin's breakout above $95,000 is supported by a confluence of macro developments. First, President Donald Trump signaled potential reductions in tariffs on Chinese imports, easing trade tensions and boosting risk appetite. Second, newly appointed SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has a pro-crypto stance, promising clearer regulatory frameworks for digital assets. Third, markets are pricing in a Federal Reserve rate cut in mid-2025, which would increase dollar liquidity and further fuel demand for alternative assets like Bitcoin.
The institutional inflow through regulated ETF vehicles is a structural shift. BlackRock's aggressive acquisition strategy, coupled with IBIT's record-breaking growth, suggests that major financial players are betting heavily on Bitcoin's long-term value. At press time, Bitcoin remained strong above the psychologically important $95,000 level, supported by continued institutional buying and improving regulatory sentiment. As the ETF ecosystem matures, BlackRock's IBIT could indeed become a cornerstone connecting traditional finance with the cryptocurrency market.
