Block, the fintech company led by Jack Dorsey, gave one ComplexCon attendee 1 BTC at the annual event in Los Angeles, a prize worth about $85,000 at the time. The giveaway was part of Block’s on-site push to introduce Bitcoin to new users through culture, shopping, and entertainment rather than through a purely financial setting. Cash App, a Block product, ran a fishing-game booth called "Lightning Lake," where participants could win small amounts of Bitcoin, with one player landing a full coin.
Maria Pesce, Block’s head of Bitcoin marketing, said the company wants Bitcoin to feel approachable, tangible, and fun. She said people could go from never having used Bitcoin to making a payment with it while walking around the lake. Block has been using multiple products to support Bitcoin adoption: Cash App lets users send, receive, and buy BTC, while Square point-of-sale terminals accept Bitcoin payments over the Lightning Network. The New York Stock Exchange-listed company also launched an ad campaign this month aimed at promoting Bitcoin as a medium of exchange. During the event, North West and rapper French Montana were also seen trying the Lightning Lake game.

One attendee landed a full Bitcoin
Block took part in the annual event organized by Complex Networks as part of an effort to introduce Bitcoin to new users through "culture, shopping and entertainment." At the venue, Cash App, a Block subsidiary, set up a fishing-game booth called "Lightning Lake." Participants could win small amounts of Bitcoin, and one player ended up catching a full coin.
Block says it wants Bitcoin to feel accessible
Maria Pesce, Block’s head of Bitcoin marketing, said the company wants Bitcoin to be approachable, tangible and fun. "People can go from never having used Bitcoin to using it to make a payment while walking around the lake," she said. Pesce added that Block’s goal is to make Bitcoin an everyday currency.
Cash App and Square are part of the broader push
Block has long used its products to support Bitcoin adoption. Cash App allows users to send, receive and buy Bitcoin. Square point-of-sale terminals also accept Bitcoin payments through the Lightning Network.
The company, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, also launched an advertising campaign this month to encourage people to use Bitcoin as a medium of exchange. Dorsey left Twitter in 2021 to focus on payments and Bitcoin adoption, and he has repeatedly said he wants Bitcoin to become a global currency and an "everyday currency."
North West and French Montana were seen at the booth
During the event, North West, the daughter of Kanye West, and rapper French Montana were also seen trying to fish for Bitcoin at Lightning Lake.
