Blockchain.com has expanded its cryptocurrency brokerage business into Ghana, adding another West African market to its regional footprint. The company said the launch is part of a wider plan to scale across Africa and give local users access to digital asset trading through its existing brokerage infrastructure.

The Ghana rollout comes after a noticeable rise in user activity before the official launch. Over the past year, Blockchain.com said active users in Ghana increased by 140%, while transaction volumes from those users rose 80%. The company said that pattern pointed to demand for digital asset platforms offering regulated and secure market access.

Nigeria performance set the pace for the move

The clearest driver behind the Ghana expansion was the company’s growth in Nigeria. After launching retail operations there last year, Blockchain.com said Nigeria became one of its fastest-growing markets. It has also built local operations in Lagos and hired staff for the region.

According to the company, brokerage transaction volumes in Nigeria have climbed by more than 700% since the retail launch. The most actively traded assets on the platform in the country are USDT, bitcoin, and TRX. That growth, the company said, encouraged it to move into neighboring markets.

Payments, remittances, and savings remain key use cases

African markets have been among the most active regions for cryptocurrency use in recent years, and Nigeria regularly appears near the top of global adoption rankings. Chainalysis data cited in the source shows Nigeria among the leading countries for crypto adoption and at the front of grassroots usage in Sub-Saharan Africa, with billions of dollars in digital asset transactions processed each year.

The source links that activity to currency volatility, remittance demand, and the rapid spread of mobile financial services. In markets where access to international financial services is limited, digital assets are being used for cross-border transfers, savings, and payments. Stablecoins tied to major currencies also serve as a store-of-value tool in some cases.

Company says regional buildout is long term

Owen Odia, Blockchain.com’s General Manager for Africa, said the company’s growth in Nigeria over the past year showed the scale of the opportunity for digital assets across the region. He also said Africa aligns with the firm’s mission of making financial services available globally.

Odia added that Blockchain.com is building for the long term by developing new infrastructure, investing in local talent, and creating products tailored to local needs. The company said teams in the region are focused on operations, partnerships, and regulatory engagement as part of that expansion strategy.

Global operating footprint already spans more than 70 jurisdictions

Blockchain.com describes itself as a global digital asset brokerage and wallet provider serving both retail and institutional clients. The company said it now operates in more than 70 jurisdictions worldwide. Since its founding in 2011, it has processed over $1.2 trillion in cryptocurrency transactions, created more than 90 million digital wallets, and verified more than 40 million users.

For Blockchain.com, the Ghana launch is the latest step in extending its digital asset infrastructure across emerging markets. Taken together with the Nigeria numbers and the rise in Ghanaian activity, West Africa is becoming a more important growth region for the platform.
