According to a Fortune report, California cryptocurrency executive Adam Iza pleaded guilty on Monday to orchestrating a failed kidnapping plot targeting the parents of Veer Chetal. The scheme is directly linked to a massive bitcoin theft in which Chetal participated, stealing 4,100 bitcoins valued at approximately $245 million at the time. The 25-year-old Iza, who also goes by Ahmed Faiq, previously ran a crypto trading firm called Zort and styled himself as “The Godfather.”
The Kidnap Plot and Its Connection to the Bitcoin Heist
Court records indicate that Veer Chetal, together with two others, impersonated technical support staff from Google and cryptocurrency exchanges to defraud a Washington state resident, stealing the 4,100 bitcoins. Iza and an accomplice then planned to kidnap Chetal’s parents in an attempt to forcibly obtain a share of the stolen cryptocurrency proceeds.
Although the abduction was never carried out, the conspiracy itself constitutes a serious federal offense. The case illustrates how digital crime can quickly escalate into real-world violence when huge sums of cryptocurrency are involved.
A Separate Fraud: Over $37 Million Stolen from Meta
In addition to the kidnapping charge, Adam Iza admitted to defrauding Meta (formerly Facebook) between 2020 and 2022. By fraudulently accessing business manager accounts and credit lines, he stole more than $37 million. This multi-year, cross-platform criminal activity underscores the audacity and complexity of Iza’s operations.
Federal prosecutors are now seeking a sentence of at least 14 years in prison. The combined weight of the kidnapping conspiracy and the massive fraud against Meta could result in one of the most severe penalties seen in recent crypto-related criminal cases, serving as a stark warning to those who attempt to mix violent schemes with cyber theft.
