Cantor Fitzgerald Launches $2 Billion Bitcoin Financing Business
US investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald has formally announced a partnership with digital asset custodians Anchorage Digital and Copper to support its expanding global Bitcoin financing business. The collaboration marks a significant step in mainstream financial institutions recognizing Bitcoin as a legitimate asset class. Michael Cunningham, Head of Bitcoin Financing at Cantor Fitzgerald, stated that the firm is launching with an initial $2 billion in financing and expects to substantially grow the operation over time.
Partner Roles and Security Infrastructure
Under the agreement, Anchorage Digital and Copper will serve as collateral managers and custodians for Cantor Fitzgerald, providing leverage to institutional investors holding Bitcoin. Both firms will use their industry-leading security solutions to custody and safeguard client assets. Nathan McCauley, CEO and Co-Founder of Anchorage Digital, noted that the partnership is built on the safety and security of federally regulated digital asset custody, combining the best of traditional finance with the best of crypto to expand the horizon for institutions in Bitcoin.
Amar Kuchinad, CEO of Copper, added that institutional investors are increasingly seeking secure routes into digital asset markets, and this partnership with Cantor Fitzgerald will meet the growing demand for sophisticated financing solutions through Copper's lending and collateral management platform.
Major US Policy Shift: SEC and OCC Ease Restrictions
This partnership coincides with the Trump administration's continued push for pro-Bitcoin policies, including the establishment of a strategic Bitcoin reserve and reversal of previous regulatory hostility under the Biden administration. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently rescinded Staff Accounting Bulletin 121 (SAB 121), which had previously prevented banks from offering Bitcoin custody services. Following this, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) clarified that banks are now permitted to engage in Bitcoin and crypto services, including asset custody. These regulatory changes cleared the path for major financial institutions like Cantor Fitzgerald to expand into Bitcoin services.
The Dual Role of Howard Lutnick
Cantor Fitzgerald President Howard Lutnick, who currently serves as the United States Secretary of Commerce, has been instrumental in this shift. Lutnick has worked closely with President Trump on initiatives such as the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, a key component of the administration's crypto strategy. His dual role bridges traditional finance and government policymaking, accelerating Wall Street's embrace of crypto assets.
Industry Significance and Outlook
Cantor Fitzgerald's entry with $2 billion reflects growing confidence among traditional investment banks in crypto assets and signals a rapid growth phase for institutional-grade Bitcoin financing services. With a clearer and more favorable regulatory environment, more large financial institutions are expected to follow suit, driving Bitcoin toward mainstream asset allocation. The participation of compliant custodians like Anchorage Digital and Copper provides institutional investors with regulatory-compliant security infrastructure, further lowering the barrier to entry.
