The Cardano Foundation's 2026 Summit was scrapped after a governance vote for 780,000 ADA funding reached 65.2% support, missing the 66.67% threshold by 1.47 percentage points. Founder Charles Hoskinson pivots to TOKEN2049 for a MiniSummit alternative.

The Cardano Foundation has canceled its 2026 Cardano Summit in Singapore, originally scheduled for October 5–6, after a governance vote failed to approve 780,000 ADA (~$1.84 million) in funding. The on-chain proposal garnered 65.2% support, just 1.47 percentage points short of the required two-thirds supermajority. On-chain data from adastat.net shows 135 votes in favor, 61 against, and 24 abstentions.

The foundation acknowledged the outcome on X: "Governance requires not just participation but a commitment to collective decisions. The Cardano community has spoken, and we respect the result."

Second Governance Defeat in Six Months

This follows a similar rejection on May 9, when DReps (Delegated Representatives) voted down a 14 million ADA proposal with only 10% approval. The latest loss underscores months of budget tensions between founder Charles Hoskinson and DReps, who demand tighter treasury spending while the foundation argues for activity funding to maintain ecosystem visibility.

Hoskinson Eyes TOKEN2049 MiniSummit

Despite the summit's cancellation, Cardano will still have a presence at TOKEN2049 in Singapore on October 7–8. EMURGO, the commercial arm, has submitted a proposal to represent Cardano. Hoskinson is exploring a larger booth and an embedded "MiniSummit" as a replacement event.

The Elephant in the Room

Behind the governance squabble lies a structural imbalance. ADA's market cap stands at $8.8 billion, yet total value locked on-chain is just $129 million, ranking 28th among public chains. Year-to-date network revenue is roughly $356,400, a sharp drop from $8.35 million in 2022, reflecting thin DeFi activity and on-chain economic usage.

The Price of Democratic Governance

Cardano's OpenGov model is a key differentiator, but it turns every major event into a political gamble. Compared to ecosystems where foundations or VCs directly allocate budgets, the DRep system is more democratic—but also slower and harder to reach consensus.
