Citrea, incubated by Chainway Labs, emerged from stealth to propose the first Bitcoin-native ZK rollup using BitVM. It leverages Bitcoin's block space for settlement via zero-knowledge proofs, supports EVM apps, and aims to make Bitcoin the ultimate settlement layer for all chains without modifying the protocol.

Citrea, a project incubated by Chainway Labs, has emerged from stealth to propose the first Bitcoin-native scaling solution utilizing ZK rollups. The innovation leverages the capabilities introduced by BitVM to natively verify zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs on Bitcoin without requiring any changes to the underlying protocol. Citrea aims to become the foundational layer for global finance by combining Bitcoin's unparalleled security and decentralization with scalability and programmability.

A Different Approach to Bitcoin Scaling

Citrea argues that any scaling solution that does not use Bitcoin's block space is not truly scaling Bitcoin and may eventually become a competitor. The project criticizes existing approaches: the Lightning Network lacks programmability, while sidechains fail to use Bitcoin's block space, diverting activity to other chains. Citrea's ZK rollup addresses both issues by using Bitcoin's block space to settle transactions while sharding execution to its own virtual machine. It claims to be the first execution layer on Bitcoin that settles on Bitcoin, the first ZK proof verification inside Bitcoin, and the first universal L2 verification within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

EVM Compatibility and Modular Architecture

Citrea enables the deployment of Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) applications on top of Bitcoin, allowing developers to bring existing smart contract logic to Bitcoin's secure environment. The project is not limited to EVM; its modular architecture can accommodate new virtual machines in the future. This opens the door for a wide range of decentralized applications—from DeFi to NFTs—to benefit from Bitcoin's robustness without sacrificing flexibility.

Current Status and Roadmap

The project is currently undergoing testing on a private testnet. Citrea reports that it is working diligently to launch a public testnet in the coming months, with more details to follow. If successful, Citrea could mark a turning point in Bitcoin's evolution, positioning it as the ultimate all-chain settlement layer while maintaining its core principles of security and decentralization.
