Coinbase wants to expand the range of crypto products it offers in Canada, according to Eric Richmond, the company’s new CEO for the country. Richmond said the exchange aims to give Canadian users access to the same advanced products available in the U.S. market, including derivatives, DeFi services and tokenized assets.
He also called for a shift in Canada’s regulatory approach. In his view, the country needs to move away from case-by-case exemptions and adopt a dedicated, coordinated national framework for digital assets so more complex crypto products can be supported.
Richmond noted that Canada moved relatively early on spot crypto ETFs and has already passed a stablecoin bill. Even so, he said regulatory guidance in Canada has advanced more slowly and in a more fragmented way than in the U.S. He said that pace is delaying retail investors in Canada from accessing products such as higher-yield lending and broader futures trading.
