Coinbase and Chainlink have announced a major expansion of their partnership by integrating Coinbase's institutional trading data onto public blockchains through Chainlink's Datalink service. This first-of-its-kind move allows developers building decentralized finance (DeFi) applications to access market information that was previously only available through centralized platforms, marking a significant step toward bridging traditional finance and onchain markets.
What Data Is Now Available Onchain?
The integration leverages Chainlink Datalink, a premium data publishing service, to bring Coinbase's order book data, spot prices, perpetual futures from Coinbase International, E-mini futures, and additional datasets covering metals, energy, and equity futures via Coinbase Derivatives Exchange. These datasets are now accessible to DeFi protocols, lending markets, and tokenized asset platforms, which have historically relied on less reliable or non-institutional sources.
Liz Martin, Vice President of Coinbase Markets, stated: “We are bringing Coinbase’s exchange market data onchain for the first time using Datalink. The data standard provided by Chainlink was a clear choice to introduce this benchmark data to onchain markets. This will enable DeFi and TradFi developers to build more reliable onchain applications across derivatives, tokenized assets, and related products.”

Reliable, institutional-grade pricing data is critical for the secure operation of derivatives platforms, lending markets, and tokenized asset ecosystems. Historically, many DeFi protocols have struggled with price manipulation or oracle failures due to low-quality data feeds. By routing Coinbase's exchange data through Chainlink's decentralized oracle network, developers gain a robust, tamper-resistant pricing foundation.
Johann Eid, Chief Business Officer at Chainlink Labs, emphasized the broader vision: “Building a full-fledged financial infrastructure on blockchain requires a security-first approach at the data layer. As institutional finance and DeFi continue to converge, this move is part of constructing programmable market infrastructure.” Since its launch, Chainlink has facilitated trillions of dollars in transaction value and now secures the majority of DeFi market volume by transaction count.
Deepening Ties: From CCIP to Base-Solana Bridge
The Datalink integration is the latest in a growing relationship between the two companies. Coinbase previously selected Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) as the exclusive interoperability provider for Coinbase Wrapped Assets. The Base-Solana bridge, which enables cross-chain transfers between Base and Solana, is also secured by Chainlink's oracle infrastructure. These collaborations demonstrate a multi-layered partnership spanning data, cross-chain communication, and asset tokenization.
Chainlink's enterprise partners include Swift, Euroclear, Mastercard, Fidelity International, UBS, and S&P Dow Jones Indices. On the protocol side, it supports Aave, Lido, GMX, and many other leading DeFi platforms. Developers can now access Coinbase's datasets via Datalink, though both companies have not publicly disclosed pricing or usage limits.
