Crypto exchange Coinbase has confirmed that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has declared effective the registration statement tied to its public market debut, clearing the company to begin trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market on April 14, 2021. The company said its Class A common stock will trade under the ticker COIN, marking one of the most closely watched listings in the digital asset sector.
Direct listing date now set
Coinbase is entering the public market through a direct listing rather than a traditional IPO. Under this structure, existing shares are listed for public trading without the standard new-share issuance typically seen in conventional offerings. The decision has drawn strong interest from investors and crypto market participants because of Coinbase’s scale and its status as a major gateway between digital assets and mainstream finance.
The company’s public debut had been delayed from March. According to Bloomberg, the setback followed enforcement action by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The CFTC fined the exchange operator $6.5 million over what it described as reckless false, misleading, or inaccurate reporting, as well as wash trading.
Valuation and industry impact in focus
Bloomberg also reported that Coinbase was valued at around $90 billion in its final week of trading on Nasdaq’s private market. That valuation underscored the market’s expectations for the company and for the broader crypto sector. Separately, Coinbase recently said it was setting up an office in India, even as regulatory uncertainty remained elevated and reports suggested the Indian government was considering a cryptocurrency ban.
Reaction across the crypto industry was largely enthusiastic. Microstrategy CEO Michael Saylor congratulated the Coinbase team and said the listing would help accelerate institutional adoption of bitcoin while catalyzing complementary industry initiatives. For many market observers, Coinbase’s Nasdaq debut represents more than a corporate milestone—it is also a signal that the crypto industry is gaining deeper visibility within traditional capital markets.
