Coinbase has introduced round-the-clock regulated gold and silver futures for eligible U.S. traders, extending its always-on trading model beyond crypto and into precious metals.

Coinbase has rolled out 24/7 trading for regulated gold and silver futures in the United States through Coinbase Derivatives Exchange. Eligible traders can now access these precious metals contracts nearly every day of the week, including weekends and holidays. The move pushes Coinbase beyond digital assets and into traditional commodities on the same always-on trading framework.

Eligible U.S. traders can access smaller metals contracts

According to the company, the new products allow traders to buy and sell futures tied to one troy ounce of gold and 50 troy ounces of silver. Access is available through participating brokers, with Interactive Brokers and NinjaTrader named among the platforms supporting the launch. The contract sizing gives market participants another route to metals exposure through a regulated U.S. venue.

That changes the trading rhythm. Commodity markets have usually operated on fixed schedules, with pauses over weekends and holidays. Coinbase’s setup gives traders more time to respond when economic releases, geopolitical developments, or market-moving headlines hit outside standard sessions. Instead of waiting for the next reopen, they can adjust positions as events unfold.

Coinbase extends the always-open crypto model

CEO Brian Armstrong commented on the launch in a social media post. Coinbase framed the rollout as another step in carrying crypto’s always-open market structure into traditional finance. The company said continuous trading can improve price discovery and give traders more flexibility during periods of market uncertainty.

Gold and silver remain major stores of value in global markets. The article cites estimates placing gold above $13 trillion in value, while silver is valued at more than $1 trillion. Demand for both metals has stayed firm during inflation concerns, central bank buying, and geopolitical tension.

Part of the company’s broader exchange expansion

The launch also fits Coinbase’s “Everything Exchange” push. Over the last two years, the company has expanded across derivatives, perpetual futures, and stock-linked products. Adding precious metals brings another traditional asset class onto Coinbase-linked infrastructure and widens the scope of what users can trade through its ecosystem.

Coinbase had already introduced gold and silver perpetual futures for eligible users outside the U.S. Those contracts settle in USDC and target traders looking for crypto-native market access. The newly launched U.S. products are different: they are regulated commodity futures offered domestically through the derivatives exchange.

The structure may reduce entry barriers for some traders as well. Precious metals futures have often leaned toward institutional participation because of contract size and brokerage requirements. With smaller contracts now available, both retail and professional traders have another way to manage metals exposure. The key shift is timing, since position management no longer depends on traditional market hours returning.
