Coinbase officially launched direct Indian Rupee (INR) support on June 1, 2026, allowing Indian users to move money between their bank accounts and the exchange without third-party intermediaries. The move eliminates the friction and risk associated with peer-to-peer (P2P) trading, which had been the dominant on-ramp for most platforms in the country.
IMPS Integration: Real-Time Bank Transfers
Deposits and withdrawals now run through IMPS (Immediate Payment Service), India's real-time bank transfer system. There are zero deposit fees, and trading fees match those of local exchanges. The exchange also offers dedicated INR order books, providing local liquidity alongside global depth. Tighter spreads benefit frequent traders, especially those executing large orders.
Full Suite of Products: Spot, Perpetuals, and Advanced Tools
Once funds land, users can trade spot markets, access perpetual futures with no expiry, and use Coinbase Advanced—professional tools including APIs, WebSocket streaming, and TradingView integration. The platform's global liquidity pool ensures better price execution than many domestic alternatives.
Trust and Compliance: Cold Storage, Insurance, and Regulatory Registration
Coinbase is listed on Nasdaq under $COIN and is a member of the S&P 500. It publishes quarterly audited financials. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, entrusts Coinbase with its crypto custody, and roughly one-third of major global financial institutions do the same. Most customer crypto assets are held in cold storage (offline wallets), backed by an insurance policy covering theft and cyber incidents. In India, the exchange holds FIU-IND registration and complies with all local tax requirements.
Phased Rollout: Some Users Await Access
Some existing users currently see a “deposits not supported” message. Coinbase confirmed a phased rollout that began May 31, 2026, gradually expanding to both new and existing accounts. New users can sign up immediately; existing users should expect access over the coming days.
Long-Term Investment: CoinDCX and Base Developer Grants
Coinbase previously invested in Indian exchange CoinDCX. Through its Ethereum Layer-2 network Base, it allocated over $1 million in grants and hackathon prizes to Indian developers. More than 4,000 developers built on Base, and roughly 150 of those projects became operational startups.
