On June 5, 2024, Coinbase officially launched its “Smart Wallets,” describing the move as a “new era” in crypto wallet design. The exchange positions the product as a gateway to blockchain for the next billion users by removing the two most persistent barriers: high network fees and the dreaded seed phrase recovery process. Smart Wallets integrate seamlessly with major applications and support multiple networks including Ethereum and Coinbase’s own Base layer-2 chain.
How Smart Wallets Work: Passkeys Over Seed Phrases
Traditional crypto wallets require users to back up a 12- or 24-word seed phrase — a daunting and error-prone task that often leads to lost funds. Coinbase’s Smart Wallets replace this with passkeys, a public-key cryptography system that leverages the biometric authentication (Face ID, fingerprint) or PIN built into modern smartphones and other devices. Users can create a wallet instantly without writing down any words, and they log in through their device’s native security layer. This approach not only simplifies onboarding but also enhances security since private keys are stored exclusively on the user’s device and never transmitted to Coinbase.
Gasless Campaign and Developer Incentives
To drive adoption, Coinbase launched the Base Gasless Campaign, offering wallet developers up to $15,000 in gas credits. This means end users can interact with decentralized applications (dApps) that integrate Smart Wallets without paying any transaction fees — a major friction point on Ethereum and other networks. The Smart Wallet system is already integrated with leading wallet libraries and aggregators, making it easy for developers to add support. For existing Coinbase Wallet users, the company is building migration tools within the Coinbase Wallet app to transition to Smart Wallets smoothly in the near future.
Companion Web App: A Hub for Asset and Identity Management
Smart Wallets are accompanied by a dedicated web app that consolidates asset management and identity features. Users can buy, send, swap, manage NFTs, and monitor transaction history from a single dashboard. This web app acts as the central interface for Smart Wallet users, further lowering the complexity of interacting across multiple chains.
Coinbase’s initiative arrives at a time when the crypto industry is desperate for better user experience. By eliminating both seed phrases and gas fees, Smart Wallets could attract millions of Web2 users who have been hesitant to dive into decentralized applications. If widely adopted by major dApps and DeFi protocols, this wallet design may become the standard for onboarding the next wave of crypto participants — from payments and gaming to social networks and beyond.
