Coinbase announced on July 24 that its Australian subsidiary has obtained an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL), clearing the way for nationwide retail crypto derivatives services. The license, typically reserved for regulated financial institutions, subjects Coinbase Australia to strict governance, transparency and consumer protection obligations equivalent to those of traditional financial firms.
License Conditions and Compliance Duties
Under the AFSL, Coinbase must enforce client asset segregation, file regular regulatory reports and ensure marketing materials are not misleading. The company stated this positions it to compete more directly with Australia's incumbent financial service providers within a compliant framework.
Product Roadmap: Perpetuals First, Futures and Options Later
Coinbase outlined a phased product strategy. The initial rollout will include perpetual contracts for crypto and equities, with futures and options to follow. This mix aims to give investors diverse risk management tools while staying aligned with evolving regulations. Australia has long seen strong demand for crypto derivatives, but compliant venues have been scarce; Coinbase's entry could reshape the competitive landscape.
Regulatory Timing and Market Positioning
The license arrives just ahead of Australia's proposed Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Bill 2025, which will mandate licensing for all crypto exchanges operating in the country. By securing its AFSL early, Coinbase has locked in compliant status before the new law takes effect, putting pressure on rivals that have yet to obtain licenses. The company is also participating in the Digital Economy Council of Australia, helping shape policy as the framework develops.
U.S. Progress Complements Global Strategy
On the same day, Coinbase disclosed that it had received conditional approval for a national trust company charter from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The charter allows digital asset custody and integration with traditional banking systems, complementing the Australian license in a dual-compliance global expansion play.
Local Team Buildout Underway
Coinbase Australia has stepped up hiring across legal, compliance, marketing, and operations roles, signaling a long-term commitment to the market. With the license secured and headcount growing, retail derivatives services could launch within months.
