The cryptocurrency custody market continues to boom, and cold storage solutions are becoming essential for users seeking to avoid online risks. Coinfinity, Austria's first Bitcoin company, has introduced the Card Wallet, a credit-card-shaped cold storage device developed in collaboration with the Austrian State Printing House—a 200-year-old institution renowned for printing passports. Their expertise in anti-counterfeiting has been applied to this seemingly simple plastic card.

Cold Storage Innovation with Banknote Security

The Card Wallet resembles a standard credit card but features multiple anti-counterfeiting measures, including microprinting and continuous color gradients, giving it a banknote-like appearance. These measures are designed to prevent fake cards from entering circulation and to ensure that the private key, generated offline, remains offline. The private key is concealed beneath a hologram on the back of the card, accompanied by a warning: do not scratch this area, as doing so would compromise the security of the funds.

This design is reminiscent of early Casascius physical bitcoins, but more modern. Until the hologram is scratched off, the key is effectively non-existent, even to the manufacturer. Users can send funds to the address printed on the front of the card, but they must scratch the seal to retrieve them. The $67 cost of the card acts as a disincentive to spend the funds, encouraging users to treat it as a long-term savings tool.

Testing and User Experience

In testing, the reviewer used the Bitcoin.com Wallet to scan the QR code on the card and easily send Bitcoin to the card's address. When they need to move or sell the funds, they can remove the security seal and import the exposed private key into a non-custodial wallet such as Electrum. It is important to note that once the seal is broken, the address should be considered compromised and should not be reused.

The back of the card also features a Chainlockcode (CLC) QR code that can be scanned with a dedicated mobile app to check balances and manage multiple cards without exposing private keys. This feature is particularly useful for serial Card Wallet collectors.

Comparison with Other Cold Storage Solutions

While Coinfinity does not support BCH at this time, Bitcoin Cash holders can generate their own paper wallets at home to achieve similar security. However, the Card Wallet offers superior tamper-proofing, a convenient credit card form factor, and a visually appealing hologram. Some users may balk at paying $67 for a solution they could replicate at home for the cost of a sheet of paper, but others will appreciate the peace of mind and the challenge to store funds without touching them.

At present, the Card Wallet only supports BTC and ETH. Its value ultimately lies in the eyes of the beholder. For the same price, one could purchase a basic hardware wallet that supports multiple cryptocurrencies and offers more flexibility. However, the Card Wallet serves as a unique passive savings tool, embodying the philosophy of cold storage with a touch of magic.
